Bill 21

Audrey Saparno

I wrote this song to give a face and a story to the effects of the Bill 21 legislation or Project de la loi 21 in Quebec which is a law enacted since 2019 that prevents the wearing of religious symbols by provincial public officials.

I hope that this song brings light and perspective to let one feel and rethink its negative impact on everyday

I hope that this song brings light and perspective to let one feel and rethink its negative impact on everyday people. I wrote it from stories of people I know and putting myself in their shoes.

This song was produced with Jim Bryson/Fixed Hinge Studio in Stittsville, ON.

Latest single released on Friday December 1 - My song “Bill 21” is a song about Layla and the impact of the Quebec legislation, Bill 21 on her life. I wanted to give a face and a story of the negative impact of Bill 21 on everyday people from and who live in Quebec. I hope you give it a listen. Available on all streaming platforms including Bandcamp:

On Sept. 29, 2023, I released “No. 1 Fan” from Jakarta, Indonesia. The song is about my dad who was from Solo, Java, Indonesia. I played the song along with a couple other originals at Pribadi cafe in Jakarta, to a beautiful crowd (mainly my family who live in Jakarta). It was a beautiful experience - one that my dad would have loved. “No. 1 Fan” is available on all streaming platforms including Bandcamp:

Upcoming release for May: “Butterflies” written and composed by me. Produced with Jim Bryson, it was a pleasure to record with Jim back on a cold day in January. I was still in full grieving mode from the passing of my dad. It was definitely a music therapy session.

On May 8, I was so grateful to perform a set live, in person and livestreamed for In Our Tongues event at the SAW Gallery in Ottawa, honouring Asian heritage month. It was lovely! See show here: I am on at 27:00 mark.

News of 2019

Performed a wonderful 30 minute set at Ottawa's Westfest with my drummer friend, Shalini. It was such an honour to have played at the last of this wonderful free festival series. Here's a link to the CTV Ottawa morning show that I did in anticipation of Westfest: And, here's a clip of one of my songs that I performed:

Memories of 2018

Grateful to have performed at Marvest, an offshoot of CityFolk Festivalin Ottawa. On Saturday, September 15th, I played two 30-minute sets one at BMO Lansdowne and a second at my favourite music store, Metro Music. Here's a wonderful article posted recently about it all:

Also had a wonderful interview on CBC's Saturday morning show, In Town and Out.

As 2018 proceeds, I hope to write as much as I can. I need to focus on this for my next recording project.

Memories of 2017...

Had a great time performing at Ottawa Porchfest on Saturday September 9th. I did a set at NU grocery at 1130 Wellington W. Here's an excerpt from my cover of Ron Sexsmith's "Secret Heart": Audrey at Porchfest 2017

On August 2nd, it was such a highlight of the summer to play my songs at Inspiration Village in the ByWard Market (on York near Sussex), in 2 half-hour sets. I was on stage at 12:30 and 1:30pm - one of the hottest days of the summer completed with a light shower. So wonderful meeting new faces and seeing old friends. Audrey at Inspiration Village

MuslimLink, a local online publication, published this wonderful article, and to them and Aicha Lasfar, I am very grateful. See here: Audrey Saparno-her music, faith, and Indonesian heritage

Being featured at Arts Night last Friday, June 30th was so fun. It was at the Unitarian Church on Cleary Ave. in Ottawa. I got to talk about my music and shared some songs. Here's a link to some video from it: Arts Night, June 30, 2017

April was a wonderful month filled with opportunities to share my songs. On April 30th, I was so grateful to have shared songs at the fundraiser for Multi-faith Housing Initiative affordable housing project in Barrhaven, named "The Haven". The fundraiser concert was organized and graciously presented by the Barrhaven United Church. The audience, the other artists, BUC were all so inspiring.

On April 22nd, I was so excited to have performed at the Ottawa Grassroots Festival, at Southminster Church. It was a wonderful afternoon gig in front of a very supportive and diverse audience. I shared 9 mainly original songs and one Indonesian folk song. I look forward to next year's OGF. Thanks to Bob Nesbitt and the many volunteers of OGF for letting me share my songs.

It was wonderful to have been part of JUNOfest, on March 31st - such an amazing experience. Pleasure to have met and shared the stage with JUNO-nominated Maria Dunn and Kathrynn Berry, at the Record Centre. Thanks especially goes out to the Record Centre and the volunteers who hosted us. <3

Here is a memorable video promo for "Songs of Muslim Women" presented by Expressions of Muslim Women on March 18th, 2017, so grateful to CBC and Sandra Abma for posting this: Audrey Saparno, Beauty Inside on CBC

Audrey's warm and powerful vocals accompanied by her acoustic guitar weave a soulful sound to her folk style songs with an R&B twist.

Her debut EP, Beauty Inside, is now available through Google Play and iTunes, on Spotify and Apple Music. A CD is available as well - contact her for your copy. If you're in Ottawa, you can also pick up a CD at The Record Centre.

"Based in Ottawa, Canada, Audrey Saparno‘s music revolves around the theme of reflection of self. She bases her music on a fusion of folk and R&B, as seen in her EP Beauty Inside. She inspires her fellow Muslim sisters as she not merely writes songs for the sake of creating songs, but as an expression of her spirituality. She aims to unify people through her art form, and that in itself is inspirational." - from
April 2017

"Checked my mailbox after several weeks and just received the most beautiful gift: The debut CD of a dear friend and fellow songwriter Audrey Saparno. Based in Ottawa, Canada Audrey Saparno Songs is taking the Canadian Folk scene by gentle storm with her distinctly Canadian brand of organic, introspective and spiritually romantic songs. With voice that harkens back to the joyful strains of Jane Sibbery (one of my all time favourite singers!) and material that reflects the honesty of a true troubadour ("Three chords and The Truth" as songwriter Harlan Howard once said) Audrey will steal your heart. Her EP "Beauty Inside" (available now on iTunes) is a lovely collection of spring, tea-time songs. Audrey ~ We're all listening now! Keep singing!"    -  Dawud Wharnsby posted on his FB page, March 2017
